How To Properly Load The HLP Baseball Swing – 3D Loading With Teacherman Richard Schenck

In the High Level Pattern (HLP) baseball swing, mastering the load phase is essential for a successful and consistent swing. In this video, Rich explains the importance of what he terms “3D Loading,” a technique that involves coordinating three critical movements to prepare for the perfect launch.

The load is just as crucial as the launch itself. According to Richard, if you load correctly and reach the proper launch position on time, it becomes almost impossible to mess up the swing. However, if you fail to load properly, your swing will be compromised, limiting your ability to reach every necessary position to hit the ball effectively.

Richard introduces the concept of 3D Loading, which he likens to the XYZ axes from geometry. Each axis represents a different movement essential for the load:

  1. X-Axis (Forward Move): This movement represents the slight forward motion toward the pitcher. Though minimal, this forward move is necessary for generating momentum when you launch. Richard explains that without this forward move, the launch will lack the necessary force, resulting in a weaker swing.
  2. Y-Axis (Coil): The Y-axis represents the coiling motion, where the hitter rotates around the hip socket, creating a force that pulls the body backward. This coil is vital for building tension that will be released during the swing.
  3. Z-Axis (Back Stretch): The Z-axis involves stretching the back, creating a tension that runs from the hip socket through the back. This movement ensures that the body is primed to release maximum power during the swing.

Rich emphasizes that all three movements—the forward move, the coil, and the back stretch—must occur simultaneously to achieve the proper load.

Performing these actions in unison creates a powerful stretch that will snap suddenly, launching the bat with force and precision.

The goal is to maintain this stretch as long as possible, only allowing the foot to drop when it’s time to swing.

When done correctly, this 3D Loading technique within the HLP swing enables hitters to generate powerful, well-timed swings, increasing their chances of making solid contact with the ball.

As Richard notes, even professional players attest that when they’re “right,” they can hit anything that comes out of the pitcher’s hand, regardless of speed, location, or movement.
